Default Oldies

Guess what, I don't really think we need a thread for every old band ever. The Beatles need one, yeah. Do The Who? Did we really need whichever fuckstick that created it to do that? No. This is not 1971. There are never going to be any discussion-worthy Who developments.

So instead of creating a new thread for every '60s or '70s band I want to talk about for 2 seconds, this is the Oldies thread. I made it because I wanted to talk about The Doors.

I always thought they were hugely overrated. Everyone always says their best album is either their first one or their last one. The eponymous one? Never got it. A bunch of songs that sound really good if you hear them for 10 seconds on a car commercial but if you sit through them they just wear on you. The ultimate culprit...the cultimate, the ultiprit, is Light My Fire. I don't think I have ever heard a thinner-sounding or more boring song that is so revered by everyone else. And the fucking album version is like 7 minutes long. This is their best album? Well, The Doors must be lame. I've heard later hits. Touch Me is another one of those good-for-10-seconds songs. Those pussy horns? I know what they were thinking. They were thinking "Durr, The Beatles have put out a couple songs with brass that sounded really good!" That is because they are The Beatles. For No One, Penny Lane--Touch Me is a piece of shit compared to those. I don't see what's so fuckin' great about Riders On The Storm either. It's tame! Boring. In fact of all The Doors songs I've heard the only one I ever really liked was People Are Strange. So, I decided to try the album it was on as a last-ditch attempt at liking this band everyone says I should.

And fucking wow. Strange Days is The Doors' masterpiece. Finally, a consistent piece of work. And it's pretty much as weird as the ideal we all have of Jim Morrison in our heads. It's not him singing Touch Me, a pussy song for, basically, conservative adults. I'm, gonna love you, til the stars, fall from the sky. Whatever, Jim.

But Strange Days, holy shit. The title track is weird and spacey and the rest is tight and interesting. Of course People Are Strange is just a great track that everyone can identify with, and has this great "face" with a lot of character, like a peculiar-looking/acting professor. I dunno? That's the best I can describe it right now. And shit, even Jim's penchant for throwing some bullshit 10-minute song on the end of his albums was less annoying on this one. When The Music's Over is totally tolerable. I mean, Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands it's not. But what is? Man, even the spoken-word Horse Latitudes earlier on, shit, it's only like a minute long! That's an interesting, Morrison-y break in the action instead of a tedious must-skip.

Why did no one tell me that Strange Days is easily their best album. Why has everyone been so wrong for so many years. I don't know, but it took this intrepid young reporter to find the truth in the story. And now, I can finally say I like The Doors, and that is a huge release for all that peer pressure.

Speaking of overrated old music, (that was in there somewhere) why is Satisfaction so popular? Man I hate that song. Good Stones' stuff-

Paint It Black, Sympathy For the Devil, Gimme Shelter, Can't Always Get What You Want

But Satisfaction makes me wanna smash my radio

And I don't like the Doors.

I didn't like The Doors either, but try Strange Days. It is really quite good.

I think my favorite Stones song is either Sweet Black Angel or Rocks Off

As a St. Louis resident, I've got to give some love to Chuck Berry, who still performs once a month over in the Duck Room.

There isn't a single song of his that can't be danced to and he's responsible for more classic songs that I even thought:

Johnny B. Goode
Maybelline
You Never Can Tell (C'est La Vie)
School Days
Sweet Little Sixteen
Rock and Roll Music
Roll over Beethoven
Route 66
etc...

Jake, don't say stupid shit like "the doors are overrated" after saying that "the beatles" ( the single most overrated band in the history of band overrating) require their own thread.
Doors aren't a big concept to understand, there's probably ,or at least I hope there isn't, a course on them like there is for the beatles.
and while there is a weird cult of personality when it comes to Morrison it's probably mostly due to him being an ok looking cat in an era where Ringo Starr was also in teen magazines.
the doors are great, from lyrics to music and they have been able to transcend their era despite the painfully dated organ solos.
I mean...you really think they put Brass on their songs because of the beatles?
that would be like someone 40 years from now saying that That Dog using a violinist in their songs was probably due to Hootie and The Blowfish's success.
in summation.

no

you're wrong Jake.

Strange Days is great no doubt, but all doors albums offer up great stuff including their debut, which to me is great.
sure Light My Fire has been played out no doubt but it's still a good song that for some reason or another keeps attracting new people to the doors generation after generation.

I think there's more earnest experimentation in pink floyd that there is on Beatles records.
not technical stuff I mean sounds and moods.
as far as the Beach boys go, the only record I own by them IS Pet Sounds.
I think it's alright, I think that a lot of the stuff I like currently I do because it reminds me of the beach boys.
I like the harmony, I found a lot of it in The Besnard Lakes and newest Animal Collective record.

yeah I like The Beach Boys. And Pet Sounds is a good album. But shit, I got a fan-edit of SMiLE, and that is twice as good. But I do like optimism in art, 'cuz it's nice, and harder to do than to go sad or dark.

and yes I see Beach Boys genes in AnCo and Fleet Foxes. It's probably overstated though. Especially with AnCo

The Beatles do require their own thread, they are the most popular musicians of all time, there are still Beatle developments in the news that people keep track of, what with the rereleases and people interested in following live appearances of Paul McCartney, and The Beatles made a shit-ton more music than The Doors.

(Also The Beatles are better than The Doors.)

Most bands are better than the doors.

But the beatles are also better than most bands.

Most overrated old bands: the list-

Pink Floyd
The Rolling Stones (they're good, not great)
Lynard Skynard (I live in the south, so this probably isn't true everywhere)
The Beach Boys
Kiss

all I got for now, I really haven't heard much of The Doors

It's not a neutral quality at all, anyone can say that the Beatles influenced them, but overall a lot of musicians listened to Floyd the most or not at all.
popularity and musical impact are two different things, else we'll be singing the praises of the crazy frog ringtone 20 years after the fact.
the beatles deserve a thread about as much as any band deserves a thread, you are in forum with a lady Gaga thread afterall.

now, if I was to take sides on this the beatles are fun, but that's it there's far more entertaining rides out there from the same time period.
a lot of beatle worship out there is based mostly on a "they tell me the beatles are good, so the beatles must be good" again, I'm not saying that they aren't great, I'm saying plainly that they are not THAT great and yes, I'd much rather listen to "Meddle" than " A Hard Day's Night" anyday of the week.

yes, popularity and musical impact are two different things, and i KNOW the beatles were more popular and i think the beatles had a bigger musical impact. experimentation is a neutral quality because, after all, you gotta use it to make good music.

the reason lady gaga deserves a thread is because people want to talk about Gaga. she is a current artist who does crazy shit and is sort of good. it's harder for an old band to warrant significant discussion on this particular message board. and yet the beatles have a ridiculously large thread.

in conclusion, shut up sparkle.
